Stainless steel
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel has become the foremost material used in water feature design. Suitable for both contemporary and classical gardens due to simple shapes and of course the highly polished finish adding depth and light to shaded areas of your garden.
Because of its qualities stainless steel is manufactured in several different grades each suitable for differing uses.
Grades of stainless steel?
waterfeatures2go only supply features of the highest quality which is why we always use '304 Grade' steel on ALL our stainless steel water features. This is the grade used for hospital surgical equipment, hypodermic needles, marine equipment etc. The grade 304 contains a high nickel content making it extremely resistant to corrosion even salt sprays, hence its use on yachts and ships.
Sheet Thickness of stainless steel?
Sheet thicknesses vary between water features due to the design, size and shape of the feature. Most features are manufactured using 1mm sheets. As the features become larger, normally 1m or above, the thickness of the sheet increases to 1.5mm and sometimes 2mm as required.
It is a common mis-conception that thin stainless steel sheets are of equal quality to thicker sheets, this is simply not the case. It is quite obvious, the thicker the steel sheet, the more robust the feature. Always check the thickness, thin sheets steel is very easy to damage and dent. The thiner the sheet, the less it costs to manufacture. Therefore if you find very cheep stainless steel water features, always check the grade of steel and the sheet thickness.
