A gardening expert advises that ponds should be well maintained, to avoid them becoming a muddy, weed-infested swamp.

Water feature maintenance is an essential component to keeping ponds, pools and even bubble fountains fresh, and pleasing to the eye.

Water feature expert Troy Scott Smith, the Head gardener at Bodnant Garden in Colwyn Bay, North Wales told the Mail Online:

“More than 200,000 visitors a year come to Bodnant so we devote plenty of time in spring to maintaining all our water features. Water needs to add to the beauty of the garden, not detract from it.”

The beautiful site in the foothills of the Snowdon mountain range includes natural and manmade water features. The 80 acre site includes waterfalls, a lily pond, fast flowing streams and even a rectangular canal.

Cleaning can transform a murky pond. Simply bail out the water with a bucket, remove plants remembering to leave them in buckets of water, in a secluded shady spot. Take out the sludge off the bottom of the pond, without damaging the liner. If you do, it’s not the end of the world a re liner repair kits are available to patch things up.
